Who is Eligible to Apply for the Fellowship?

The fellowship is primarily targeting youth ages 20-30 from Morocco, with a focus on applicants from underrepresented regions and disadvantaged backgrounds. Priority will be given to those from local Amazigh communities in places like the Rif region. However, we welcome applications from talented digital storytellers of all nationalities who are passionate about our mission. The most important criteria are having a zeal for narrative-driven digital art and media, as well as leadership potential to make a positive social impact.

What kinds of digital projects will fellows work on?

Fellows will be empowered to explore any topics meaningful to their communities and lived experiences through various digital mediums. Some suggested themes include oral histories, youth culture, environmental issues, women's rights, migration, and more. The goal is to harness local voices and stories to spark thoughtful discussions around social and cultural issues. Projects can take many forms, from podcasts and interactive websites to AR/VR experiences, animations, games, and more. Our multidisciplinary workshops will provide tools and guidance for fellows to realize their creative visions.

How will the final projects be showcased?

All fellows' digital storytelling projects will be featured in either an online or offline exhibition after the program. For the virtual showcase, their interactive works and video presentations will be hosted on a dedicated website for a nominal entrance fee to raise funds. An in-person exhibition may also take place at our partner Rif Tribes Arts Center, depending on COVID guidelines. In addition to highlighting the fellows' talents, this event aims to build industry connections and allow the public to engage with their thought-provoking creations.

What is the long term impact envisioned?

Our hope is that the Riwaya Fellowship will empower a new generation of youth to advance positive change through technology and the arts. Not only will fellows gain career-changing skills, but their locally grounded projects can raise awareness of important issues and give voice to underrepresented communities. By cultivating an engaged alumni network, we also aim to sustain this work well beyond a single cohort. Through university partnerships, corporate sponsorships and recurring programming, we seek to develop Riwaya as a hub where digital storytelling consistently promotes inclusion, dialogue and social progress for years to come.
